About Us

Christchurch G&S Society was formed in the spring of 1984 by Nigel Finch, with a plan to perform that coming September at the newly opened Regent Centre in Christchurch. The production chosen was Iolanthe. It was a simple beginning with the set for Act One acquired, legally, from the Forestry Commission – six fir trees, ranging from 4 to 8 feet tall. However the show was a sufficient success to enable thoughts to go towards a show for 1985 – The Mikado. Being better known than Iolanthe it had a much larger audience and really placed Christchurch G&S on the amateur musical society map. Since then we have gone on to perform all of the G&S operettas, including Utopia Ltd and Thespis, mixing box office favourites with some of their lesser known pieces.

The company is approximately 40 strong but is always looking for new members of any age or ability. As long as you can sing, to any standard, then you’re welcome to join us – you don’t have to audition, just turn up. The only auditions we do have are open auditions for principal parts. So, if you’ve no desire to strut your stuff as a principal then joining us couldn’t be easier. No matter how old or how young, how skilled or not, you will find a warm welcome awaits you. We encourage new talent and there will always be someone there to help you.

So why not give us a try? If you have prior experience, so much the better, but if you’re a complete novice then don’t let that stop you. We all have to start somewhere, and where better to start than with a company that will firmly support you?

The company puts on one show a year, in late September, at the Regent Centre, Christchurch, Dorset. Rehearsals typically start around the end of February and there is only one rehearsal a week. However, in the month before the show week, we have additional Sunday afternoon rehearsals.

We rehearse from 19:30 to 22:00 every Thursday in the Old Hall at Christchurch Junior School, Clarendon Road, Christchurch, BH23 2AA.

Membership is £50 per annum, payable in one or two lump sums. There are no other fees apart from £2 to hire a musical score for the duration of the rehearsal period.

If you’d like to know more about us, then please use our Contact Us page and feel free to ask as many questions as you want. We will endeavour to answer you as soon as possible, frequently the same day.

We look forward to seeing you soon!
